Squadron 283 Sons Invade Houston

by Squadron 283 Editor on September 2, 2013

From Friday, August 23 through Sunday, August 25, Commander Tom Yaeger, First Vice Jim Yocum, Second Vice Charles Curtis, Executive Board member/Historian Frank Wiley, and adjudant Greg Frost attended the Sons of the American Legion National Convention in Houston, Texas. While we were guests, and not delegates, we all found the experience very enlightening. In attending some of the meetings, we learned that Children and Welfare is a very important project of the Sons. We learned its very important to support programs that support children. Also, while exploring the vendors at the convention, we decided we would like to focus some of our efforts on assisting homeless veterans around the West Los Angeles Veterans Administration center.

Most importantly, we got a chance to become closer friends with the California Detachment Commander, Chris Affolter.  Chris informed that the SAL National Commander is planning to visit California later this year. Chris stated he would like to bring him to the Palisades Post. We have agreed to host him when he comes to visit our Post.

In fact, we are proud to announce that  Chris Affolter will be participating in our Living History program as a speaker on November 21. Chris served in the United States Marine Corps in Desert Storm. This will certainly be a can’t-miss event! You will want to mark your calendars now.

In Chris’s honor, at his request, we will be serving dinner from Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles. Additionally, Chris informed that the SAL National Commander is planning to visit California later this year. Chris stated he would like to bring him to the Palisades Post. We have agreed to host him when he comes to visit our Post.

Post 283 through the hard work of Adjutant Scott Erickson put on a great barbeque dinner at at Pappas Barbeque for the entire California delegation, in honor of the late Jim Hackney, Ruth Hackney’s husband.

We also got some free time, at which time we were able to attend American Legion night at the Houston Astro vs. Toronto Blue Jays baseball game.
